Ankylosaurus
✨ The living battle tank
Ankylosaurus was a large herbivorous dinosaur that lived near the end of the Cretaceous period, about 68 to 66 million years ago. It belonged to a group called ankylosaurs, known for their heavily protected bodies. Its back and sides were covered with bony plates embedded in the skin, which acted like natural armor against predators.
This dinosaur had a low, wide body, four strong legs, and a small head with a beak-like mouth adapted for eating plants. Although its body was bulky, its short legs allowed it to move steadily across the landscape. One of Ankylosaurus's most recognizable features was the large club at the end of its tail.
Made of connected bones, this structure could be swung as a powerful defense tool against attackers such as Tyrannosaurus rex. Ankylosaurus lived in what is now western North America, in environments that included forests and coastal plains. Scientists believe it fed on low-growing vegetation, such as ferns and shrubs.
Fossils of this dinosaur have helped researchers understand how some prehistoric animals evolved strong defensive adaptations to survive in a world filled with large predators.
