Archery
✨ The Calm and Precision of the arrow
Archery is a sport in which a person uses a bow to propel an arrow toward a target. Drawing the string bends the bow’s limbs and stores elastic potential energy. When the string is released, much of that energy is transferred to the arrow, making it accelerate forward.
The arrow’s speed, range, and stability depend on several factors, including the bow’s design and draw weight, the arrow’s mass and shape, and the archer’s technique. Aiming also requires control of posture, the bow hand, the drawing hand, and the release. Small differences in how the string is released can change the arrow’s path, so consistency is an important part of the sport.
Modern bows may include sights, stabilizers, and other equipment that can help with aiming and balance. At longer distances, gravity makes the arrow follow a curved trajectory, while air resistance gradually reduces its speed. The arrow also flexes as it leaves the bow; its stiffness and its compatibility with the bow influence this behavior.
Archery includes several disciplines, such as target archery and field archery, with different settings and rules. In competition, athletes shoot a set number of arrows from specified distances and score points according to where the arrows land. Safe practice requires checking that the shooting area is clear, following range commands, and never shooting while someone is in front of the line.
