Artificial Satellites

✨ The space spies

Artificial satellites are human-made objects placed into orbit around Earth or other celestial bodies. Unlike natural satellites such as the Moon, they are built and launched by people for specific purposes. To remain in orbit, a satellite must move at the right speed so that its forward motion balances the pull of gravity.

If it slows down too much, it falls toward the body it is orbiting; if it moves fast enough, it can continue traveling around it. Thousands of artificial satellites have been sent into space since the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, the first satellite placed into Earth orbit.

Today, they are used for many activities, including weather forecasting, television and internet communication, navigation systems such as GPS, scientific research, and monitoring changes on Earth. Some satellites observe oceans, forests, and climate patterns, while others help astronauts and space agencies study the universe.

Although satellites vary greatly in size and design, they all require careful engineering to survive the conditions of space and complete their missions.
