Barcelona

✨ The city of fantasy and mosaics

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and one of Spain’s main cities. It lies on the Mediterranean coast in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, between the sea and the Collserola hills. The city has a Mediterranean climate, with generally mild winters and hot, relatively dry summers. Its position has long favored maritime trade and contact with other parts of Europe and the Mediterranean.

Barcelona is also a major urban center, with several million people living in its wider metropolitan area. Catalan and Spanish are the city’s two official languages, reflecting the region’s distinct cultural and historical identity. Barcelona’s history stretches back to the ancient period, and the city developed greatly during the Middle Ages as an important center of the Crown of Aragon.

Its urban landscape changed significantly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, especially with the expansion beyond the old city walls. Barcelona is widely associated with the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, whose works include the Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló. The city also hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics, which helped transform its waterfront and international profile.

Today, Barcelona combines residential neighborhoods, universities, industries, cultural institutions and a large tourism sector, making it an important economic and cultural center of the Mediterranean.
