Chair

✨ The friend of rest

A chair is a piece of furniture designed to support one person in a seated position. It usually has a seat, a backrest and legs, although some chairs also have armrests, a swivel base or other features. The seat supports much of the body’s weight, while the backrest can support the back and contribute to a comfortable posture.

The legs distribute the load over the floor and help keep the chair stable. Common materials include wood, metal and plastic, often combined with foam, fabric or leather for comfort. Height and shape affect how a chair feels to use, so a desk chair is generally designed differently from a dining chair or an outdoor model.

Throughout history, chairs have taken many forms, from simple wooden seats to adjustable office chairs. Their design depends on the intended activity, available materials and users’ needs. A well-designed chair should support the body without unnecessarily restricting movement and should remain stable during normal use.

Stability depends on factors such as the position of the legs, the size of the base and the distribution of the seated person’s weight. Some modern chairs allow the height or backrest position to be adjusted for different users. Although a chair is an everyday object, its design involves ideas from mechanics, ergonomics and materials science: it must carry loads, resist tipping and provide support for its intended use.
