Chameleon
✨ The wizard of camouflage
The chameleon is a reptile known for its unusual appearance and remarkable adaptations. There are more than 200 known species of chameleons, most of which live in Africa and Madagascar, although some are found in parts of southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
They inhabit forests, savannas, and other warm environments. Their bodies are adapted for life in trees, with grasping feet, a tail that can wrap around branches, and independently moving eyes that allow them to observe different directions at the same time.
One of the chameleon’s best-known features is its ability to change color. This change is not mainly used for camouflage, but also for communication, temperature regulation, and expressing emotions or social signals.
Chameleons catch insects and other small prey with a long, fast-moving tongue that can extend far beyond the length of their body. Most species lay eggs, while some give birth to live young. These reptiles play an important role in their ecosystems by helping control insect populations.
