Condor
✨ The Giant of the Andes
The condor is a large bird of prey known for its wide wings and its ability to soar over vast landscapes. Two main species exist: the Andean condor, which lives along the Andes Mountains and nearby regions of South America, and the California condor, found in parts of North America.
With a wingspan that can exceed 3 meters, the condor uses rising air currents to glide for long periods without needing to flap its wings often. This flying technique allows it to search large areas while saving energy.
Condors are scavengers, meaning they feed mainly on the remains of dead animals. They play an important role in nature by helping remove animal remains from the environment. These birds usually reproduce slowly, laying a single egg and caring for their chick for many months.
In the past, some condor populations declined because of habitat loss, poisoning, and human activities. Conservation programs, including breeding and release efforts, have helped protect these remarkable birds, although they still require careful monitoring.
