Cone
✨ The gourmet point
A cone is a three-dimensional geometric shape with a circular base and a single point called the vertex. In a right circular cone, the vertex lies directly above the center of the base, giving the familiar shape of an ice-cream cone or a party hat. The distance from the center of the base to its edge is the radius, while the perpendicular distance from the base to the vertex is the height.
The surface connecting the circular base to the vertex is curved. The distance measured along this curved surface from the vertex to the edge of the base is called the slant height. A cone can be narrow or wide, tall or short, depending on the dimensions of its base and its height. Cones are useful in geometry because they combine a flat circular base with a curved surface and a single vertex.
Their volume can be calculated with the formula V = 1/3 × π × r² × h, where r is the radius of the base and h is the perpendicular height. This means that a cone with the same base and height as a cylinder has one-third of the cylinder’s volume. Conical shapes are common in everyday life: funnels, traffic cones, some lampshades, piping parts and certain roofs can have this form.
When a cone is cut by a plane parallel to its base, the resulting smaller cone has the same general shape as the original one. This property helps introduce the idea of similarity and shows how geometric figures can change in size while keeping their proportions.
