Desk

A desk is a piece of furniture designed to provide a stable, convenient surface for activities such as writing, reading, studying, drawing or working with a computer. A typical desk has a horizontal work surface supported by legs, panels or a frame. Some models include drawers, shelves or compartments for storing objects. The height, depth and size of the surface vary according to its purpose.

A school desk may be relatively simple, while a computer desk can include space for a monitor and equipment. Desks are commonly made from wood, engineered wood, metal or plastic, and several materials may be combined in one piece. The work surface must be strong enough to support the objects placed on it without excessive bending. The design of a desk also involves stability and ergonomics.

Its legs and supporting structure must distribute the load toward the floor and prevent the furniture from wobbling or tipping during normal use. The height of the work surface influences the position of the arms and upper body, which is why desks intended for different activities may have different dimensions.

Some modern desks allow the height to be adjusted, including models designed to be used while sitting or standing. A desk may look like a simple everyday object, but its construction relies on basic principles of mechanics and materials science. It must withstand loads, remain stable and provide a suitable working surface for the tasks it is designed to support.
