Disgust

✨ The invisible shield

Disgust is a basic emotion that helps humans avoid things that may be harmful or unsafe. It often appears as a reaction to spoiled food, unpleasant smells, poor hygiene, or situations that suggest a risk of contamination.

This feeling can trigger physical responses such as nausea, a change in facial expression, or the urge to move away. These reactions are partly controlled by brain regions involved in emotions and decision-making, including the insula, which plays an important role in detecting unpleasant sensations.

Disgust is not only linked to survival. It can also be influenced by culture, personal experiences, and social learning. Different societies may not feel disgust toward the same foods, behaviors, or objects.

Over time, humans have developed this emotion as a protective mechanism, helping them avoid possible sources of illness while also shaping social rules about cleanliness and acceptable behavior. Although disgust can be useful, excessive or inappropriate disgust may sometimes affect how people judge others or respond to unfamiliar situations.
