Emoticons
✨ The language of faces
Emoticons are small combinations of characters used to express emotions, ideas, or reactions in written digital communication. The word comes from the combination of "emotion" and "icon".
One of the first widely known examples appeared in 1982, when computer scientist Scott Fahlman suggested using :-) and :-( to help readers distinguish jokes from serious messages on an online discussion board.
These simple symbols became the foundation of a new way to add tone and feeling to text. Over time, emoticons evolved into more visual symbols called emojis, which include faces, objects, animals, and many other images.
While emoticons are made from keyboard characters, emojis are encoded digital pictures supported by modern devices and applications. Today, people around the world use both forms to make messages clearer, show humor, express feelings, or replace some words. Their meaning can vary depending on culture and context, so understanding them requires paying attention to how they are used.
