Fennec Fox
✨ The sand elf
The fennec is the smallest species of fox and is famous for its very large ears, which help it detect prey and release heat in the hot desert environment. This small mammal lives mainly in the sandy deserts of North Africa, where it is well adapted to dry conditions.
Its thick fur protects it from temperature changes between the hot days and cold nights, while the fur on the soles of its feet helps it move on hot sand. The fennec can survive with little water because it obtains much of the moisture it needs from its food.
Mostly active at night, the fennec avoids the strongest desert heat and searches for insects, small rodents, birds, eggs, and plants. During the day, it usually rests in underground burrows that it digs in the sand.
Fennecs live alone or in small family groups, and parents care for their young until they become more independent. Although it faces threats such as habitat loss and illegal capture, this desert fox remains an important part of North African ecosystems.
