First and Last
✨ The magic queue
First and last describe positions in an order or sequence. The first is the one that comes before all the others, while the last is the one that comes after all the others. In a line of children, for example, the child at the front is first and the child at the back is last. The same idea applies to numbers, events, pages, places, and many other things.
In the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, the number 1 is first and 5 is last. These words do not describe size, quality, or importance by themselves; they simply indicate position. What counts as first or last depends on the order being used, such as the order in which people arrive, the way objects are arranged, or the order of events in time.
The ideas of first and last are useful for understanding sequences and following instructions. When several events happen one after another, the first event happens before the others, and the last happens after them. A story has a beginning and an ending, and a list can have a first item and a last item.
In a race, the participant who crosses the finish line before the others may finish first, while the participant who crosses after all the others finishes last. Being first does not automatically mean being better, and being last does not mean being worse. These words only describe a position within a particular order. If the order changes, the same person or object can be first in one situation and last in another.
