Germany
✨ The land of inventions and castles
Germany is a country in Central Europe. It borders Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the west. It also has coastlines on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Covering about 357,600 km², Germany is one of Europe's larger countries. Its capital and largest city is Berlin, in the northeast. The landscape changes noticeably from north to south.
The North German Plain is mostly low and gently rolling, while central Germany contains hills, forests and uplands. Farther south, the land rises toward the Alps. The Zugspitze is the country's highest point, reaching 2,962 metres above sea level. Major rivers such as the Rhine, Danube, Elbe and Weser cross Germany and have played an important role in shaping its landscapes, transport routes and settlements. Germany has a temperate climate influenced by both the Atlantic Ocean and continental air masses.
In general, winters are colder in the east and southeast, while western regions tend to be milder. Summers are usually moderate, although heat waves can occur. Forests, farmland, rivers, lakes and wetlands are important parts of the country's natural environment. The Rhine is one of Germany's major waterways, passing through densely populated and industrial regions before reaching the North Sea through the Netherlands. The Danube rises in southern Germany and then crosses several European countries before flowing into the Black Sea.
Germany consists of 16 federal states, known as Länder, each with its own government and responsibilities. Its location between northern and southern Europe, and between Atlantic and continental influences, gives it an important geographical position. The combination of varied relief, river systems and climate creates a wide range of landscapes. From the coastal plains in the north to the foothills of the Alps in the south, Germany contains several distinct geographical regions within a relatively compact territory.
