Gravitational Waves

✨ The ripples of space

Gravitational waves are tiny distortions in the fabric of space and time that travel through the universe. They were predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916 as a consequence of his theory of general relativity.

These waves are created when extremely massive objects, such as black holes or neutron stars, accelerate and disturb the structure of space-time. As they move outward, they carry information about some of the most powerful events in the cosmos.

For a long time, gravitational waves were only a theoretical idea because they are incredibly difficult to detect. In 2015, scientists made the first direct observation of these waves using the LIGO detectors, confirming Einstein’s prediction.

Since then, researchers have detected many signals produced by collisions between black holes and neutron stars. Studying gravitational waves provides a new way to explore the universe, different from traditional astronomy based on light, and helps scientists better understand the behavior of the most extreme objects in space.
