Greater Flamingo

✨ The pink balancer

The greater flamingo is a large waterbird known for its long legs, curved bill, and pinkish feathers. It is the largest species of flamingo and lives in parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia.

These birds are usually found in shallow lakes, coastal lagoons, and saltwater wetlands, where they search for food in the water. Their long legs allow them to move through muddy areas, while their specially adapted bills help them filter small organisms such as algae, tiny crustaceans, and other aquatic particles.

Greater flamingos often live in large groups that can contain thousands of individuals. They communicate through different calls and movements, especially during breeding periods when they gather in colonies. Both parents take part in caring for the chick, which is fed with a nutritious liquid produced by the adults.

The pink color of their feathers comes mainly from pigments found in their food. These birds face threats from the destruction of wetlands, pollution, and changes in water conditions, making the protection of their habitats important for their survival.
