Heredity
✨ The Secret of Our Origins
Heredity is the process through which living beings pass certain biological characteristics from parents to their children. These characteristics are influenced by genes, sections of DNA that contain instructions used by cells to build and operate the body.
A child receives genetic information from both biological parents, which explains why family members can share features such as eye color, height tendencies, or certain biological traits. However, heredity does not determine every aspect of a person. The environment, lifestyle, nutrition, and personal experiences also play an important role in development.
Genes are organized into structures called chromosomes, which are found inside the cells of the body. Humans usually have 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs, with one chromosome from each pair inherited from each biological parent. Sometimes changes occur in DNA, known as mutations, and they can have different effects, from no noticeable impact to causing certain genetic conditions.
Scientists study heredity to better understand how traits are transmitted, how diseases can develop, and how living organisms evolve over generations. The study of heredity is a key part of genetics, a field that helps explain both the similarities and differences among living beings.
