Hippopotamus

✨ The funny submarine

The hippopotamus is one of the largest land mammals in the world. Despite its heavy body and short legs, it is well adapted to life near water. Its eyes, ears, and nostrils are located high on its head, allowing it to see, hear, and breathe while most of its body remains underwater.

A thick layer of skin helps protect it, and a natural oily substance secreted by its skin helps prevent drying and provides some protection from the sun. Contrary to its appearance, the hippopotamus is an excellent swimmer and can stay underwater for several minutes.

Hippopotamuses live mainly in rivers, lakes, and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa. During the day, they usually rest in water to keep their bodies cool, while they leave the water at night to feed on grasses. Although they spend much of their time in aquatic environments, they do not eat fish and are mostly herbivores.

They live in groups called pods, often led by a dominant male. Despite being an important part of freshwater ecosystems, hippopotamuses face threats from habitat loss and conflicts with humans.
