Spotted Hyena
✨ The masked prankster
The spotted hyena is a large carnivorous mammal known for its powerful body, strong jaws, and distinctive spotted coat. Often misunderstood as only a scavenger, it is actually a skilled hunter capable of catching much of its own food. Its strong teeth and jaw muscles allow it to break bones and access nutrients that many other predators cannot use.
Spotted hyenas live mainly in the grasslands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, where they are well adapted to different environments. Their famous laughing-like calls are a form of communication used to express excitement, identify individuals, and maintain social relationships.
Spotted hyenas live in organized groups called clans, which can include many individuals and are usually led by females. These groups cooperate when hunting, defending their territory, and raising young. Their diet includes mammals of various sizes, as well as remains left by other predators.
By consuming almost every part of their prey, hyenas help recycle nutrients in their ecosystems. Although they are adaptable animals, some populations are affected by habitat loss, conflicts with humans, and negative perceptions that have led to persecution.
