Kilt
✨ The legendary checkered skirt for men
A kilt is a knee-length garment with pleats at the back, traditionally associated with Scotland. It is usually made from woven wool fabric featuring a tartan pattern, although modern versions may use cotton, synthetic fibers or plain-colored materials for everyday wear. Unlike a skirt, a traditional kilt is wrapped around the body and fastened with leather straps and buckles.
It is commonly worn with a belt, long socks, sturdy shoes and, on formal occasions, accessories such as a sporran, a small pouch worn at the front because the kilt has no pockets. Its design allows freedom of movement while providing comfort in a range of weather conditions. The modern kilt developed during the eighteenth century from the earlier belted plaid worn in the Scottish Highlands.
Over time, it became a symbol of Scottish identity and is now worn by people of different backgrounds during ceremonies, weddings, cultural festivals and sporting events. Although certain tartan patterns are linked to specific families, organizations or regions, many designs are available for anyone to wear.
Kilts are also used by pipe bands, military regiments with Scottish traditions and cultural groups around the world. Combining practical design with historical significance, the kilt remains one of the best-known traditional garments in international culture.
