Meganeura

✨ The giant dragonfly

Meganeura was a giant prehistoric insect that lived about 300 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period. It belonged to a group of ancient insects related to modern dragonflies, although it was not a true dragonfly in the scientific sense.

With a wingspan that could reach around 65 to 70 centimeters, Meganeura was one of the largest flying insects known to have existed. Its large size made it a remarkable predator in the forests and wetlands of that distant era, where it hunted smaller insects and other small animals.

The world of Meganeura was very different from today. During the Carboniferous period, many regions had vast tropical forests with high levels of atmospheric oxygen, which may have helped some insects grow to much larger sizes than their modern relatives.

Meganeura had strong wings, large eyes, and powerful jaws adapted for catching prey while flying. It disappeared millions of years before the arrival of dinosaurs, and scientists study its fossils to better understand how ancient ecosystems worked and how insects have changed throughout Earth's history.
