Ostrich
✨ The giant of the savanna
The ostrich is the largest living bird in the world and is famous for its long neck, powerful legs, and inability to fly. Instead of flying, it has evolved a body adapted for running at high speed. Its strong legs allow it to reach impressive speeds and escape many predators, while its large eyes help it spot danger from a distance.
The ostrich has two toes on each foot, a unique feature among birds, which helps it move efficiently across open landscapes. Its feathers also play an important role in temperature regulation and display behaviors. Ostriches live mainly in the open areas of Africa, including savannas, grasslands, and semi-deserts.
They feed mostly on plants, but they also eat insects and small animals when available. Groups of ostriches often include several individuals, and males may help protect eggs and young. The female lays some of the largest eggs of any living bird, and both parents can take part in caring for the chicks.
Although ostriches are well adapted to dry environments, some populations are affected by habitat changes and human activities.
