Philippines
✨ The archipelago of seven thousand islands
The Philippines is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia, made up of more than 7,600 islands between the South China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean. Its territory is commonly divided into three major island groups: Luzon in the north, the Visayas in the center, and Mindanao in the south. Luzon is the largest island and contains the capital, Manila, within the densely populated metropolitan area of the same name.
Cebu, located in the Visayas, is another important urban and economic center, while Davao is a major city in Mindanao. Because the country stretches across a large area of ocean, its landscapes vary greatly, from coastal plains and coral reefs to mountain ranges, forests and volcanic peaks. Mount Apo, on Mindanao, is the country's highest mountain, reaching about 2,954 meters.
The Philippines has a tropical climate, generally warm and humid throughout the year, with rainfall patterns influenced by monsoon winds. From around June to November, many areas experience a wetter season, and powerful tropical cyclones can affect the country, especially the eastern and northern regions. The islands lie along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates interact, so earthquakes and volcanic activity are part of the country's natural environment.
The Philippines is also recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, including many species found nowhere else. Its seas contain extensive coral reefs and support rich marine ecosystems. Agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, services and tourism all contribute to the economy. Filipino and English are official languages, while numerous regional languages are spoken across the islands.
