Pigeon

✨ The city explorer

The pigeon is a common bird found in many parts of the world, especially in cities and towns. The species most often seen around humans is the rock pigeon, which originally lived on cliffs and rocky areas before adapting to urban environments. Pigeons have strong wings, excellent navigation abilities, and a compact body that helps them fly efficiently.

They are known for their ability to find their way home over long distances, thanks to a combination of visual landmarks, memory, and other senses. Their relationship with humans has existed for thousands of years, including their use as messenger birds.

Pigeons mainly eat seeds, grains, and other plant materials, although urban pigeons may also find food from human sources. They usually build simple nests on ledges, cliffs, or buildings, where both parents take part in caring for the young. Like other members of the dove family, pigeons produce a special nutritious liquid called crop milk to feed their chicks.

These birds have adapted well to human environments, but their populations can be affected by habitat changes, pollution, and diseases. Pigeons continue to play a role in ecosystems by spreading seeds and serving as part of urban wildlife.
