Rabbit
✨ The jumping champion
The rabbit is a small mammal belonging to the family Leporidae, which also includes hares. It is found naturally in many regions, especially in grasslands, forests, and areas with low vegetation. Domestic rabbits descend mainly from the European rabbit, which was first domesticated several centuries ago.
Rabbits are herbivores that feed mostly on grasses, leaves, vegetables, and other plant materials. Their digestive system is specially adapted to process fibrous foods, and they produce two types of droppings, allowing them to recover important nutrients through a process called cecotrophy. Their strong hind legs help them run quickly and escape predators.
Rabbits are animals with excellent senses, particularly hearing, which allows them to detect possible threats. They communicate through sounds, body positions, and movements such as tapping their hind legs on the ground. Female rabbits, called does, can give birth to several litters of young each year, with babies known as kits.
In the wild, rabbits usually live in underground burrows where they find protection and raise their young. Domestic rabbits are now common pets around the world and require appropriate care, including a balanced diet, enough space, and regular attention. Their calm behavior and social nature have made them one of the most popular small domestic animals.
