Raccoon
✨ The Little Masked Thief
The raccoon is a medium-sized mammal native to North and Central America, although it has also been introduced to some other regions. It is easily recognized by the dark markings around its eyes, which look like a mask, and by its ringed tail. Raccoons are highly adaptable animals that can live in forests, wetlands, cities, and suburban areas.
They have very sensitive front paws that help them handle objects and search for food. Their diet is varied and may include fruits, insects, small animals, eggs, and aquatic creatures. This flexible diet allows them to survive in many different environments.
Raccoons are mainly active at night and usually spend the day resting in tree hollows, rock shelters, or other protected places. They are good climbers and swimmers, which helps them explore different habitats. Despite a common belief, raccoons do not actually wash their food before eating; they often move their food around in water because this increases the sensitivity of their paws.
Females usually raise their young alone, teaching them how to find food and avoid danger. Although raccoons are not considered globally threatened, habitat changes, road accidents, and conflicts with humans can affect some populations.
