Rectangle

✨ The perfect frame

A rectangle is a four-sided geometric shape with four right angles. Its opposite sides are parallel and have the same length, so the two longer sides are equal to each other and the two shorter sides are equal as well. A rectangle is a special type of parallelogram. Its diagonals connect opposite corners, have the same length, and bisect each other.

A square is also a rectangle because it has four right angles, but a rectangle does not have to be a square: its adjacent sides may have different lengths. Rectangles are easy to recognize because their corners are all right angles, even when the shape is drawn in a different orientation.

The area of a rectangle is found by multiplying its length by its width: A = l × w. For example, a rectangle that is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide has an area of 40 cm². Its perimeter is the total distance around the shape, calculated with P = 2(l + w), which gives 26 cm in this example. Rectangles are common in everyday life.

Doors, books, sheets of paper, screens and many building surfaces have a rectangular shape or are based on one. In geometry, the rectangle is useful for learning about lengths, angles, area and perimeter. It also helps introduce more complex ideas because many shapes and objects can be divided into rectangular parts that are easier to measure.
