Sofa
✨ The island of hugs
A sofa is a piece of furniture designed mainly for sitting or reclining, usually by several people at once. It generally consists of a sturdy frame covered with upholstery, with cushions or padded sections that provide support and comfort. Frames can be made from wood, metal, or combinations of materials, while the padding may contain foam, fibers, springs, or several layers working together.
The upholstery can be made from fabric, leather, or synthetic materials. The shape and firmness of a sofa depend on its construction and intended use. Some models have movable cushions, adjustable sections, or mechanisms that allow part of the seat to become a bed. When a person sits on a sofa, their weight creates forces that are transmitted through the cushions and frame to the floor.
The padding deforms under pressure and then partly returns to its original shape, depending on the material and its condition. This is why a new cushion can feel different from one that has been used for years. Sofas also provide practical functions beyond seating: they can define a living space, support activities such as reading or watching television, and sometimes offer storage.
Regular cleaning helps remove dust and particles from the upholstery, while the care required depends on the materials used. A well-designed sofa therefore combines structural strength, cushioning, and materials suited to everyday use.
