Songkran

✨ The biggest water fight

Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year festival and one of the most important celebrations in Thailand. It usually takes place in April, following the traditional Thai solar calendar, and marks the beginning of a new year. The festival is widely known for its water celebrations, where people splash water on each other in streets and public spaces.

This custom comes from an older tradition in which gently pouring scented water over elders and Buddha images symbolized respect, purification, and the wish for good fortune. Today, Songkran combines religious practices, family gatherings, cultural activities, and public celebrations.

During Songkran, many Thai people return to their hometowns to spend time with their families, visit temples, make offerings, and participate in ceremonies to honor their ancestors. The water rituals have evolved over time into large community events, especially in cities where locals and visitors join festive water activities.

Although the celebration is often associated with fun and water fights, its deeper meaning is connected to renewal, gratitude, and respect for others. Songkran is also celebrated by Thai communities in other countries, helping share Thai culture and traditions around the world.
