South Africa

✨ The Rainbow Nation

South Africa is located at the southern tip of Africa, with coastlines along both the Atlantic and Indian oceans. It shares borders with Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Eswatini, while Lesotho is an independent country completely surrounded by South African territory. Covering about 1.22 million square kilometres, the country has varied landscapes, including coastal plains, grasslands, mountains, forests and dry areas.

The Great Escarpment is a major landform, rising toward the interior plateau. South Africa has several climate zones, from Mediterranean conditions in the southwest to subtropical and semi-arid climates elsewhere. The Orange and Limpopo are among its major rivers, although much of the country receives relatively little rainfall. Its ecosystems support diverse wildlife, including elephants, lions, rhinoceroses and buffalo. Protected areas such as Kruger National Park help conserve this biodiversity.

South Africa is highly diverse in culture and language, with 12 official languages, including isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans and English. It has three capitals: Pretoria is the administrative capital, Cape Town the legislative capital, and Bloemfontein the judicial capital. The economy includes mining, manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, finance and services, while the country is an important producer of gold, platinum and chromium.

Its modern history was shaped by European colonisation, segregation and apartheid, a system of institutionalised racial discrimination that lasted for decades. In 1994, South Africa held its first democratic elections based on universal adult suffrage, and Nelson Mandela became president. Today, it is a constitutional democracy and a member of organisations such as the African Union. Its varied landscapes, wildlife, languages, cultures and history make it an important country on the African continent.
