Sphinx

✨ The desert riddle

The sphinx is a mythical creature that appears in the traditions of ancient Egypt and ancient Greece. It is usually represented with the body of a lion and a human head, although its appearance can vary depending on the culture. In ancient Egypt, sphinxes were often placed near temples and royal monuments as protective figures.

The most famous example is the Great Sphinx of Giza, a massive limestone statue built during the reign of Pharaoh Khafre around the 26th century BCE. Egyptian sphinxes were generally associated with strength, protection, and royal power. In Greek mythology, the sphinx had a different role.

It was described as a creature that guarded the entrance to the city of Thebes and challenged travelers with a riddle. According to the legend, the hero Oedipus solved the riddle and defeated the sphinx. Over time, the sphinx became a symbol connected with mystery, knowledge, and hidden truths.

Although the Egyptian and Greek sphinxes share some similarities, they developed in different cultural contexts and do not represent exactly the same tradition. Today, the sphinx remains an important figure in archaeology, literature, and popular culture.
