Square

✨ The perfect balance

A square is a flat geometric shape with four straight sides of equal length and four right angles. Its four corners are therefore the same size, with each angle measuring 90 degrees. A square belongs to the family of quadrilaterals, which are shapes with four sides.

It is also a special kind of rectangle because it has four right angles, but unlike an ordinary rectangle, all four of its sides have the same length. When a square is drawn, its opposite sides are parallel, meaning they remain the same distance apart and never meet, even if they are extended.

The diagonals, which join opposite corners, also have equal lengths and cross at the center of the shape. Squares appear in many familiar objects, such as floor tiles, windows, chessboards and some signs. Their regular structure makes them useful in architecture, design and mathematics. The size of a square can be described by the length of one side.

If that side measures 4 centimeters, for example, the perimeter is 16 centimeters because all four sides are equal. Its area is 16 square centimeters, found by multiplying the side by itself: 4 × 4. This relationship can be written as area = side × side. A square can be turned around its center without changing its appearance, and it has four lines of symmetry. These properties make it one of the simplest and most recognizable shapes in geometry.
