Star

✨ The sky brightness

A star is a geometric figure made from straight line segments that form points around a central area. Unlike a circle or a square, a star does not have just one standard shape. It can have different numbers of points and different proportions. One of the most familiar forms is the five-pointed star, often drawn with five outer points and five inward angles.

Depending on how it is constructed, a star may be a simple outline or a filled figure. In geometry, the points, sides, angles, and symmetry of a star can all be studied. A regular five-pointed star has a high degree of rotational symmetry: it looks the same after a rotation of 72 degrees around its center. It also has five axes of reflectional symmetry when its points and proportions are arranged regularly.

Stars appear frequently in drawings, symbols, decorations, maps, signs, and visual designs. Their shape can be constructed by connecting points around a circle in a particular order rather than joining neighboring points. This creates the characteristic inward and outward angles. Some star-shaped figures are regular and highly symmetrical, while others are deliberately irregular.

It is also useful to distinguish a geometric star from an astronomical star. A geometric star is a two-dimensional figure that can be drawn on a flat surface, whereas an astronomical star is a huge, hot sphere of plasma that produces energy through nuclear reactions in its interior. The two meanings share the same name because their visual association has become common, but they describe completely different things.
