Stegosaurus
✨ The plated armored giant
Stegosaurus was a herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic Period, about 155 to 150 million years ago. Its fossils have been found mainly in western North America, in areas that were once covered by large plains and forests. Stegosaurus is easily recognized by the two rows of large bony plates along its back and the spikes at the end of its tail.
These plates were made of bone covered by skin, and scientists continue to study their exact purpose. They may have helped with temperature regulation, visual communication, or species recognition. The tail spikes, sometimes called a "thagomizer," were likely used as a defense against predators.
Despite its large body, Stegosaurus had a relatively small head compared with other dinosaurs of similar size. Its teeth were small and suited for eating low-growing plants, suggesting that it fed mainly on vegetation close to the ground. It moved on four legs, with shorter front limbs and longer back limbs that gave its body a distinctive shape.
Stegosaurus lived alongside other dinosaurs, including predators that may have threatened it. Its fossils have helped scientists understand how plant-eating dinosaurs adapted to their environments during the Jurassic Period. Like many other dinosaurs, it eventually disappeared long before humans appeared on Earth.
