Sydney

✨ The pearl of the Pacific and surfers

Sydney is the capital of the Australian state of New South Wales and one of the country’s largest cities. It lies on Australia’s southeastern coast, around a natural harbour connected to the Tasman Sea. The harbour has sheltered bays, islands and inlets, and its waterways have strongly influenced the city’s history and development. The city extends far beyond its central business district, with residential neighbourhoods, parks and coastal communities.

The Blue Mountains lie to the west, while the Pacific Ocean borders it to the east. Several well-known landmarks are associated with the city. The Sydney Opera House stands beside the harbour and is recognised for its distinctive roof structures. Nearby, the Sydney Harbour Bridge carries road and rail traffic across the water and connects the northern and southern parts of the city.

Sydney also has many beaches, including Bondi Beach, and green spaces such as the Royal Botanic Garden. It is an important centre for business, education, culture and transport. The city has universities, museums and international connections, while its population includes people from many cultural backgrounds, reflecting Australia’s migration history.

Sydney’s urban area brings together dense neighbourhoods, public spaces and major transport routes, while its coastal setting gives the city a close relationship with the sea. The region also has a long history of Aboriginal presence, which forms an important part of its cultural heritage. Today, Sydney combines a modern urban economy with coastal landscapes, public spaces and a diverse population.
