Table

✨ The banquet desk

A table is a piece of furniture with a flat, supported surface used for placing objects, eating, working, or carrying out other everyday activities. Most tables consist of a tabletop and a supporting structure, often made of legs, a central base, or a combination of both. Tables can be built from wood, metal, glass, stone, plastic, or several materials joined together.

Their size, shape, height, and construction vary according to their purpose. A dining table, for example, is designed to provide space for meals, while a desk is adapted to activities such as writing or using a computer. Some tables can be folded, extended, adjusted in height, or fitted with drawers and shelves to meet particular needs.

When objects are placed on a table, their weight produces forces that are transferred through the tabletop and supporting structure to the floor. The table must therefore be sufficiently strong and stable for its intended use. Its stability depends not only on the strength of the materials but also on the arrangement of its supports and the position of the load.

A low center of mass and a wide, well-supported base generally make a table harder to tip over. The tabletop may be rigid, but it can still bend slightly when subjected to a load, depending on its material, thickness, and design. Tables are therefore simple examples of how materials, forces, and structural design work together in an everyday object.
