Triceratops

✨ The three-horned giant

Triceratops was a large herbivorous dinosaur that lived about 68 to 66 million years ago, during the final part of the Cretaceous period. Its fossils have mainly been discovered in western North America, in areas that are now part of the United States and Canada. An adult could grow to around 9 meters long and weigh several tons.

It is easily recognized by its three facial horns and the large bony shield, called a frill, at the back of its skull. Scientists think these structures may have helped with display, species recognition, or defense, although their exact role is still debated. Triceratops walked on four strong legs and had a large, powerful body adapted for eating plants.

Its mouth contained rows of teeth that were constantly replaced, allowing it to process tough vegetation. Despite its intimidating appearance, it was not a predator but a plant-eater that probably used its horns and frill to protect itself from threats, including large carnivorous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex.

Triceratops disappeared around 66 million years ago during the mass extinction event that ended the Cretaceous period. Today, it remains one of the best-known dinosaurs because of its distinctive appearance and the many fossil discoveries that have helped scientists understand its life.
