Turtle

✨ The house on the back

Turtles are reptiles known for their protective shell, which is part of their skeleton and covers their body. They belong to the group of animals called Testudines, which includes both turtles and tortoises. Turtles live in many parts of the world and can be found in oceans, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and on land.

Their size varies greatly, from small species only a few centimeters long to giant turtles that can weigh hundreds of kilograms. The shell is made of two main parts: the upper section called the carapace and the lower section called the plastron. Most turtles can pull their head and limbs inside the shell for protection, although the ability varies between species.

Turtles have diverse diets depending on their environment and species. Some eat mainly plants, while others feed on insects, small animals, or a mixture of different foods. Aquatic turtles are often excellent swimmers, while land species move more slowly and are adapted to life on solid ground.

Female turtles usually lay eggs on land, even when they live in water, and the young hatch without receiving care from their parents. Many turtle species have long lifespans, with some living for more than a century. However, they face serious threats from habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and illegal trade, making conservation efforts important for their survival.
