United Kingdom
✨ The land of tea and legends
The United Kingdom is an island country in northwestern Europe made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It covers about 244,000 square kilometres. London is the capital and largest city, located in southeastern England on the River Thames. Great Britain, which contains England, Scotland and Wales, is the largest island of the United Kingdom, while Northern Ireland occupies part of the island of Ireland.
The country is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea. Its landscapes range from lowland plains and rolling hills to rugged mountains. Ben Nevis in Scotland, at 1,345 metres, is the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom has a temperate maritime climate, strongly influenced by the surrounding Atlantic Ocean.
Winters are generally cool rather than extremely cold, while summers are usually mild, although conditions vary across the country. Western areas tend to receive more rainfall, while eastern regions are generally drier. The country has many rivers and lakes, including the Thames, Severn and Trent. English is the main language, while Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish are also recognized in parts of the country.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. It consists of four constituent countries with different legal and administrative systems. The United Kingdom was a member of the European Union until 2020 and remains a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
