Velociraptor

✨ The strategic hunter

Velociraptor was a small carnivorous dinosaur that lived about 75 to 71 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period. Its fossils have mainly been discovered in what is now Mongolia and northern China. Contrary to its famous image in movies, Velociraptor was much smaller, reaching about 2 meters long including its tail and weighing around 15 to 20 kilograms.

It had a long, stiff tail that helped it keep balance while moving, and a narrow skull filled with sharp teeth suited for catching prey. Like other members of the dromaeosaurid family, it had a large curved claw on the second toe of each foot, which was probably used to hold onto prey rather than simply as a cutting weapon.

Velociraptor was a fast and agile predator that likely hunted small animals such as lizards, mammals, and other dinosaurs. Scientists believe it had feathers because close relatives of Velociraptor show evidence of feather-like structures, although it is not known exactly how much of its body was covered.

Fossils found in Mongolia, including the famous specimen discovered alongside a Protoceratops, provide clues about its behavior and possible hunting habits. This dinosaur belonged to the group of theropods, the same broad group that includes modern birds. Its discovery has helped scientists understand the close evolutionary relationship between dinosaurs and birds.
