Vincent van Gogh
✨ 1853–1890, Post-Impressionist painting
Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch painter born in 1853 in Zundert, in the Netherlands. Before becoming an artist, he worked in different fields, including as an art dealer and a preacher. He began painting seriously in his late twenties and created most of his famous works during the last decade of his life.
His early paintings often showed rural workers and everyday scenes, with darker colors influenced by Dutch traditions. After moving to France in 1886, his style changed as he discovered brighter colors and new approaches developed by other modern painters. Van Gogh produced more than 2,000 artworks, including about 850 paintings and many drawings and sketches.
His works are known for expressive brushstrokes, strong contrasts of color, and a personal way of representing light and emotion. Among his best-known paintings are The Starry Night, Sunflowers, and Bedroom in Arles. He spent periods of his life struggling with mental health problems and was treated in several places, including Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
In 1890, at the age of 37, he died in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, from a gunshot wound. His reputation grew greatly after his death, and he is now considered one of the most influential artists in the history of Western painting.
